About

Welcome to MAKS Ballet Studios, place of creativity, artistry, and fun through dance.

From our youngest MAKS Mini Movers to our seniors and aspiring elite dancers, we offer exceptional training in classical ballet, contemporary dance, jazz, tap, hip hop, across, and lyrical styles.

We are dedicated to providing a nurturing environment for students of all ages and levels.

The MAKS difference

Founded in 2016 with the aspiration to create a nurturing and safe environment where dancers of all levels can develop their skills and artistry, explore personal expression, and make lifelong friends. Since then, MAKS Ballet Studios has grown to be one of Canberra’s premier dance schools that brings together a community that feels more like a family.

At the core of our studio are our esteemed dance teachers, led by directors Matthew Shilling and Katherine Arnold-Lindley, both of whom have had illustrious careers as professional dancers. With their extensive experience and expertise, they ensure that every student is challenged to pursue their passion for dance, to develop their skills, and to build a strong mindset to support them in all aspects of their lives.

We believe in the power of dance to inspire, transform, and uplift. Our students have numerous opportunities to perform and showcase their talents throughout the year, fostering their growth and confidence on stage. Our annual concert, held at prestigious venues around Canberra, is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our dancers.

In everything we do, we encourage

  • Technical excellence and artistic expression
  • Personal growth and development
  • Celebrating the joy and community that dance creates, and
  • Balancing challenge and support to create an environment students can thrive in.

We invite you to join us at MAKS Ballet Studios, where creativity, artistry, and fun converge in the world of dance. Discover your passion, unleash your potential, and become part of our vibrant dance family. Let us guide you on an extraordinary journey of self-discovery and artistic expression.

Our faculty

Our teaching staff are experienced dance teachers, each holding the relevant certification for their dance genre. Many have also had professional dance experience and/or experience running their own dance schools and all of them are passionate about dance and nurturing our students – whether they dance for fun or are pursuing dance to an elite level.

MAKS is led by directors and husband-wife team, Matthew Shilling and Katherine Arnold-Lindley. Trained in NSW and Canberra, respectively, they have toured the world, enjoying international careers in highly respected dance companies – including the Sydney Dance Company where they danced under the artistic directorship of one of Australia’s most distinguished creative luminaries, Graeme Murphy.

Having excelled as professional dancers and choreographers, Matthew and Katherine, supported by their skilled team of teachers, now enjoy sharing the joy of dancing with the MAKS community.

Our studios

Located in Canberra at Heffernan St, Mitchell, MAKS Studios provide top-notch facilities tailored to benefit our students and parents. Our modern, air-conditioned dance studios feature sprung floors with Tarkett surfacing, ensuring a safe dance environment.

Conveniently accessible with ample parking right outside the doors. The studio is also right across the road from dance store Attitude Australia, who we work closely with to ensure our students are fitted safely in all dance shoes, including pointe shoes.

Our original studios host two spacious dance studios and two student common rooms equipped with change rooms, lockers, and all required equipment to enhance learning.

Our recently acquired space next door hosts two further large dance studios, bathrooms and change rooms upstairs, and works are ongoing to finalise more studio, common areas, change rooms, reception and office space downstairs.

Parents and visitors can enjoy a welcoming reception area with notice boards, providing updates and the latest dance materials. The area also includes a small dance shop where you can find dance essentials, hair kits, and second-hand dancewear and shoes sold on consignment within our MAKS community.
